Commute Waiting Periods: Intervention for Rest

Commutes is a time when we should all be free to rest, however, it does not facilitate rest and even causes more stress.

Won’t knowing exact waiting times help commuters? This concept challenges the notion that more information is better. It metaphorises information into 3 stages of performative art that targets feelings of anxiety, restlessness and frustration. In our hectic lives, we find ourselves constantly rushing and checking for the time. If travel time is fixed, instead of worrying about time, the visual inferences help us to momentarily slow down through mindfulness while anticipating the train.

My research and explorations examined the system of information needs and its visualization to improve waiting periods by nudging more restful states free from anxiety and stress during waiting periods.

After rounds of prototyping and user testing, I identify these key insights:

I found that metaphors are the key to my concept. Firstly, it illustrates a cycle of life that helps to group the motion graphics into stages. These stages, when they consist of clear contrast and transitions, provide a sense of progression that in turn provides the basis to create anticipation. This sense of progression also helps users relate the motion graphics to waiting time. Secondly, the nature of these metaphors can evoke positive moods and perceptions.

In addition, I found that Tunnels provide an environment which I can use to amplify these moods. It also facilitates an overall transition of vibrancy that builds anticipation and a sense of progression. Finally, speeds and density can hint progression and create a sense of urgency to inform train's arrival.

I crafted a framework for the motion graphics which presents a clear structure to the 3 stages of latency. This helps commuters pace and anticipate the approaching train.

First stage: since it is a longer period, slow and less vibrant graphics tell commuters to relax and take a seat.
Second stage: a build up of speed, density and energy conveys a sense of urgency to get ready at the door.
Third stage: a crescendo effect creates peak energy levels to tell commuters that the train is coming!

Awaken with Nature
is a more concrete motion graphics that reveals the growth of trees, suitable at the Botanic Gardens and during Christmas.
Arise with Singapore
is a more concrete motion graphics, based on the metaphor, the building of the Singapore skyline, that complements NDP celebrations and is suitable at the Marina Bay or Changi Airport to promote Singapore to tourists.
Alive with Dots
is a more abstract visualization of a runway show. Associated with performances, it could be used in the lively city areas. Being minimalist, it is suitable for peak periods
As my concept sparks a paradigm shift in mindset, it could be soft launched to slowly ease commuters to adjust their lenses.
It can start with more concrete integrated visuals to provide familiarity, and start off nodal. Later, digital time can be removed, as commuters become familiar... After 6 months, commuters should be well versed and accustomed to the new system. New designs can be introduced when they get desensitised.
